I only got one night in Phnom Penh so I went out. Nick wanted to find this pizza place that was supposed to be particularly good, and it was on the main street, which was like a three minute walk from our hotel. Although, from there, it was about a twenty minute walk. Eventually we found it and had pizza and we closed the place down actually, but it wasn’t terribly exciting nor was it as good as we thought.
It was on the walk to and from here that I saw the young mothers with their tiny children sleeping in their laps as they walked over. I also saw one lamp post that had been spraypainted with graffiti that just said “I <3 U.” There were a lot of people sleeping on the streets, and still a lot of people trying to sell their wares – especially to us. There was also one really loud and noisy club close to the hotel. I also noticed as we passed by one crossroad that a mother and some of her kids (they looked maybe forty and maybe some tweens) were having a fire in the street. It didn’t look particularly functional, like they were cooking or keeping warm… more like they were just having a fire because fires are awesome.
There was some SASer running around being really obnoxious. I know his name but I’m not going to say it, just in case. But he was looking for weed and alcohol, and he was wearing some stupid/ugly mask that he got in Japan or China that was only black and white and covered his whole face. I wanted to lock him in the hotel.
