I'm bored to tears by my religion and politics class and I want nothing more than to drop it and never think about it again.  Today the professor tried to say that Islam was not a religion.  It's basically the textbook definition of a religion.

 

I'm writing this as much to vent about it as I am to procrastinate the "work" that I have to do for it.  I guess I'll describe it.

 

We have to do "field reports," which are supposed to be an "analysis of and reflection on" your port experiences relevant to class discussions and readings.  But all you're really supposed to do is talk about wu wei and being in the moment and effortless effort and other spiritual crap that has nothing to do with religion or politics.

 

We have to take essay tests where we essentially have to do the same things.

 

And we have to take a quiz on a book where we will likely be asked similar things.

 

We will never talk about religion or politics.  We won't talk about terrorism or the modern umma or the religious right or the fact that 60% of Americans (or so) believe that creationism should be taught with evolution in schools and how that is an ACTUAL example of RELIGION and POLITICS.

 

The professor says that he wants to make us "allergic" to the word religion.  If that was the point of the god damn class then why is it in the title?  We also don't talk about politics, we talk about history instead, because apparently history rhymes with politics or somesuch.

 

I feel so cheated and disappointed and I did what I could to drop it and add another course but they wouldn't let me.  Gag me.
